Clocks

Everything seems to revolve around time. Most of us have more than one type of clock in our homes.

Most people have an alarm clock to make sure they get up to get to their jobs on time; they are simply as necessity of life. Alarm clocks make some kind of loud noise at a specified time to wake people from their sleep. Alarm clocks are used to help people start their days or to allow them to take a short nap and be awakened in a short period of time. Traditional alarm clocks usually were wind up clocks that had one or two bells that would ring to awaken the sleeper. The noise made by modern alarm clocks can be beeps, buzzers, or even music. They usually have a button that must be pushed to stop the noise. Many alarm clocks have a snooze button that stops the sound for a short interval of time when pushed. Many people use these snooze buttons to get a few more winks of sleep before arising.

Another type of clock is the cuckoo clock. These clocks work with a pendulum and they strike at the top of every hour. The sound of the common cuckoo bird was installed in them from about the middle of the 18th century and is still used in the clocks today.

Most cuckoo clocks are carved in very traditional styles of a chalet and hang on the wall. The case is made of wood and usually decorated with animals or leaves. When the clock strikes an automated bird comes through a door at the top of the clock. Sometimes, the bird moves as the clock is striking. This is usually accomplished by an arm that raises the back of the carving.

Cuckoo clocks are mad with two different movements. Some are set on one day movements, and others have one week movements. Some of these fascinating clocks are made with movements that are musical and they play a song on a music box after they strike the hour and half-hour. The song is normally only played after the strike at the top of the hour. Almost all of the current cuckoo clocks move with weights. There are very few that work with springs. Weights of the clock are in the shape of pine cones. The sound of the clock is made by two small pipes with bellows that are attached to the top of them. The bellows are activated by the movement of the clock when air is sent into the pipes at the strike of the clock.

These are just two types of clocks that are commonly found in homes. There are many other clocks that are not mentioned in this article. Sometimes the fancy clocks, such as cuckoo clocks and grandfather clocks, are sought out by collectors. Some of these beautiful clocks can cost many thousands of dollars to purchase. They are more than just a clock. They are works of art because they have intricate designs and carvings.
